Inlays and onlays

Composite or ceramic restorations made outside the mouth.

About this service

An inlay (or onlay when cusps are covered) is a restoration between a filling and a crown - fabricated from an impression and then cemented. Ideal for large defects where a filling would not last, but the tooth still has enough structure to avoid a full crown. Maximum preservation of natural tooth.

Step by step

How the procedure works

  1. Local anaesthesia and caries removal.
  2. Cavity prep per inlay protocol (precise margins).
  3. Digital intraoral scan.
  4. Temporary filling.
  5. Inlay fabricated in CAD-CAM lab (24-72h).
  6. Try-in and adhesive cementation.

When it is needed

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between an inlay and a filling?
A filling is layered in the mouth. An inlay is fabricated in the lab from an impression then cemented - better margins, less shrinkage, longer life.
How long does a ceramic inlay last?
Typically 12-15+ years with good hygiene. Longer than a composite filling.
When choose an onlay over a crown?
When the tooth has enough structure that it does not need full coverage. The onlay preserves more natural tissue.
