Hemisection

Saving a multi-rooted tooth by removing only the diseased root.

About this service

Hemisection is a technique used on multi-rooted teeth (usually lower molars) where only the affected root is removed while the healthy half is kept. This avoids full extraction when only one root is problematic. Ideal for patients who want to keep their own tooth instead of going to an implant.

Step by step

How the procedure works

  1. Assessment on X-ray/CBCT - which root to remove, plan.
  2. Root canal treatment of the healthy root (if not already done).
  3. Local anaesthesia.
  4. Surgical separation of the roots by drilling.
  5. Extraction of the diseased root, healthy half preserved.
  6. Restoration of the remaining structure with a crown after healing.

When it is needed

Materials & technology

Piezo-surgery for precise root separation without damaging the remaining structure. Endodontic equipment (apex locator, rotary files) for precise treatment of the healthy root.

Frequently asked questions

Is the remaining tooth stable?
Yes, if properly endodontically treated and prosthetically restored. A crown after hemisection is mandatory - it ties the remaining structure together.
How long does such a tooth last?
With good hygiene and proper prosthetics - 10-15+ years. It behaves practically like an ordinary crown on a tooth.
Why not an implant straight away?
Hemisection preserves your own bone and adjacent structures. When there is a choice, your own tooth is usually the best option.
